There are many good text-books on the subject which require from two to three terms to complete; but the press of other important studies is so great that it is better to have a treatise which may be completed in a single term with perhaps but two recitations a week. In making a book of this kind, the purpose has been to secure the greatest brevity with the least loss of the qualities of a good text-book. Much of the comment on different institutions is left to the teacher, who will know best how to economize time as the case of his class requires.
